Justice for Someone, Eventually
In light of the verdict of the Casey Anthony trial, I’ve been inspired to write a bit on the idea of “justice” as it relates to the trial.
Within minutes of the first “Not Guilty”, my Facebook feed and Twitter feed were flooded with comments regarding the trial: “SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!?!?”, “Can’t believe that verdict!”, and “She’s innocent?!”. Several people said things as articulate as “OMG! SHE IS NOT INNOCENT!!!!!!!! A HIGHER POWER WILL JUDGE HER!!!!! SHE WILL BURN IN HELL!!!!!” First, I’d like to point out something to the segment of the population saying things similar to the last comment; you cannot say that a higher power will judge her and proceed to judge her yourself.
For so many people (particularly talking heads and people totally unrelated to the case), the idea of justice has become one of an unmerciful slaughter machine (reminiscent of a Saw movie contraption) with only one setting—GUILTY. They’ve been trying to feed Casey into the machine for the last three years, and now that the jury has found her NOT GUILTY, these people cannot move on because they have dedicated so much time to trying to send her to the slaughter.
Do not mishear me, Caylee Anthony died long before her time, and no one has admitted to knowing what truly happened to the girl. This is not the justice—it is an injustice to Caylee and the US judicial system. The justice was seen in this trial when 12 people of varying backgrounds came together to hear evidence and decide on Casey’s guilt or innocence. These twelve decided that based on the evidence presented to them by the prosecution that it was not enough to fulfill the first three charges, but it was enough for the four charges of lying to law enforcement. The jury weighed the evidence against a suspect, decided where it matched up and where there just was not enough evidence, and made the appropriate decisions.
People who are unrelated to the case and still up in arms about the verdict need to cool their heels for a minute. They need to take down their signs that read “Baby Killer” and “Go Ahead and Party”. They need to remember that in the end a higher power will judge us all and might not take too kindly to the current comments from the peanut gallery.
And to whoever contributed to the death of Caylee Anthony, take heed of the Man in Black:
You can run on for a long time, run on for a long time, run on for a long time. Sooner or later God will cut you down. Sooner or later God will cut you down.
